PROJECTS OF HEART OF MONTGOMERY

There are challenges ahead as Heart moves into the future with exciting new ventures:

  • Formation of a Medical Reserve Corps meeting challenges of disaster preparedness. The MRC charge includes strengthening the public health infrastructure and improving emergency preparedness. Working in concert with other disaster agencies, the MRC will provide, supply, staff and maintain a special needs shelter for use anytime a tragedy strikes the county. Many regard development of the MRC as a significant step forward in disaster preparedness. Interest from the medical community has been enthusiastic and on which will build upon previous efforts to respond in times of need.

  • Development of a "Friends for Life" project in conjunction with Tri-County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services (MHMR) and the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. It is designed to help the community recognize the warning signs of mental illness among children and teenagers and teach methods that lead to mental wellness and healthy life skills. Using Yellow Ribbon techniques, Heart and MHMR are moving forward with a countywide campaign to make suicide prevention tools available to everyone—particularly in view of the area's alarming suicide rate among ages 15-24.

  • Heart also is reviewing suggestions to form a Provider Health Network (PHN), a plan matching citizens who cannot pay for medical care with physicians willing up the following services.

Volunteers Working Hard
